The Neighbourhoods mode lets players play an open world game design and lets players interact with the top players. It's also the first title in the series that features the Neighbourhoods mode. The game was praised for its playability, but microtransactions, as well as the poorly implemented Neighbourhoods mode, were heavily critiqued by both players and critics alike. That said Visual Concepts would at least improve the latter in future updates.

NBA 2K14 is the 15th installment in the entire series, and this one was also the highest-selling sports game of the 8th generation. Offering a range of features like the training camp mode, brand new signature abilities, and much more. Some critics have voiced concerns about the design of the game.

The director, Spike Lee, had an enormous influence on the game, and he desired to see the MyCareer mode to be focussed more on telling stories.
