Cell phone use has become a widespread challenge in modern classrooms. In response to students' frequent use of cell phones in class, a Florida science teacher took extreme measures, which ultimately led to his suspension.
Overview of the incident
Dean Liptak, a science teacher in Pasco County, Florida, was suspended for using a signal jammer in class to prevent students from using cell phones. Pasco County School Board members formally approved Liptak's five-day unpaid suspension at a meeting on Tuesday. Liptak did not challenge the decision.
Specific circumstances
The incident occurred at Fivay High School from March 31 to April 2. During this time, Liptak activated the signal jammer in the classroom to interfere with students' cell phone signals. "We are supposed to put our phones in our backpacks, but most of the students in my school took them out throughout the class," junior Braxton Mora told ABC affiliate WFTS-TV, which shows that cell phone use has become a common problem in the school.
Teacher's intentions
When questioned by the school district investigator, Liptak said he never intended to cause trouble. He believes that as long as the jammer is not used for malicious purposes, its use is allowed. Liptak's original intention seems to be to ensure that students can focus on the class instead of being distracted by their mobile phones. However, his behavior has caused greater controversy.
