All the medals which are to be distributed to the winners of the Olympics and Paralympics are to be made out of metal extracted from small, electronic gadgets like mobile phones.As part of the ‘Tokyo 2020 Medal Project', the organising committee requested people to donate their mobile phones that are currently not in use.

Between April 2017 and March 2019, roughly 80,000 tons of mobile phones and small electronic devices were collected from all over Japan.
