Hacking into homes: ‘Smart home' security flaws found in popular system

Cybersecurity researchers at the University of Michigan were able to hack into the leading "smart home" automation system and essentially get the PIN code to a home's front door.To get more news about biometric safe locks, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

Their "lock-pick malware app" was one of four attacks that the cybersecurity researchers leveled at an experimental set-up of Samsung's SmartThings, a top-selling Internet of Things platform for consumers. The work is believed to be the first platform-wide study of a real-world connected home system. The researchers didn't like what they saw.At least today, with the one public IoT software platform we looked at, which has been around for several years, there are significant design vulnerabilities from a security perspective," said Atul Prakash, U-M professor of computer science and engineering. "I would say it's okay to use as a hobby right now, but I wouldn't use it where security is paramount."

Earlence Fernandes, a doctoral student in computer science and engineering who led the study, said that "letting it control your window shades is probably fine."

"One way to think about it is if you'd hand over control of the connected devices in your home to someone you don't trust and then imagine the worst they could do with that and consider whether you're okay with someone having that level of control," he said.

Regardless of how safe individual devices are or claim to be, new vulnerabilities form when hardware like electronic locks, thermostats, ovens, sprinklers, lights and motion sensors are networked and set up to be controlled remotely. That's the convenience these systems offer. And consumers are interested in that.

As a testament to SmartThings' growing use, its Android companion app that lets you manage your connected home devices remotely has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. SmartThings' app store, where third-party developers can contribute SmartApps that run in the platform's cloud and let users customize functions, holds more than 500 apps.

The researchers performed a security analysis of the SmartThings' programming framework and to show the impact of the flaws they found, they conducted four successful proof-of-concept attacks. How is all this possible? The security loopholes the researchers uncovered fall into a few categories. One common problem is that the platform grants its SmartApps too much access to devices and to the messages those devices generate. The researchers call this "over-privilege."

"The access SmartThings grants by default is at a full device level, rather than any narrower," Prakash said. "As an analogy, say you give someone permission to change the lightbulb in your office, but the person also ends up getting access to your entire office, including the contents of your filing cabinets."

More than 40 percent of the nearly 500 apps they examined were granted capabilities the developers did not specify in their code. That's how the researchers could eavesdrop on setting of lock PIN codes.

The researchers also found that it is possible for app developers to deploy an authentication method called OAuth incorrectly. This flaw, in combination with SmartApps being over-privileged, allowed the hackers to program their own PIN code into the lock-to make their own secret spare key.

Finally, the "event subsystem" on the platform is insecure. This is the stream of messages devices generate as they're programmed and carry out those instructions. The researchers were able to inject erroneous events to trick devices. That's how they managed the fire alarm and flipped the switch on vacation mode.

Yale boosts in-home security with Smart Safe and Cabinet Lock

Having previously focussed on boosting the external security of your home with its smart devices, Yale is now turning to the inside of your home with two new products: the Smart Safe and the Smart Cabinet Lock.To get more news about biometric safe locks, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

It's the Smart Cabinet Lock that's, perhaps, the most interesting. Designed to fit into an existing cupboard, this battery-powered lock is built to prevent unauthorised access. For example, if you've got kids and you want to keep them out of the drinks cabinet or medicine cupboard.

The Smart Cabinet Lock comes as two parts: the main lock fits into the cupboard and locks automatically when the door catch engages. The lock is Bluetooth powered and can be controlled directly from your smartphone when it's in range. You can also connect the lock to Apple HomeKit, which should mean that you can remote control the lock if you have a Bluetooth-enabled home hub in range, such as a HomePod or Apple TV. You can also connect the Smart Cabinet Lock to the Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge, controlling it remotely from the Yale Access app. When the lock starts to run out of battery, you're sent plenty of warnings. Should you choose to ignore them, there's no override option for this lock, as the entire device is hidden in a cupboard. However, we have been told that if you put more than 40kg of pressure on the lock, the door catch will snap, giving you access: this is the cheap bit to replace, leaving the lock intact.

Yale has also thought about what would happen if a child were to lock themselves in a cupboard, and the Cabinet Lock lights up when it's dark to highlight the push-to-unlock button on top. We're told that the Cabinet Lock will go on sale in Q2 for €70 (around £60).

Joining the Cabinet Lock is the Smart Safe, which is exactly what you think it is. This model can be controlled from the smartphone app or connected to the Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge for remote control.

As with Yale's other safes, the Smart Safe has keypad entry on the front. If the batteries run out, the safe can be temporarily powered via a 9V battery, in much the same way as the company's smart locks, such as the Yale Conexis L1. There's also a physical key to override the safe door.

The Smart Safe will also be available in Q2, priced at €200 (around £170). We'll bring you reviews of both when samples are available.

New Study on Smart Locks Reveals a Shift Toward Digitizing Security

Most consumers are accustomed to the idea of smart devices and may already integrate their home technology stack with an Amazon Alexa or Google Home system. The shift toward digitization of basic household needs comes as a growing number of digital natives age and begin to have their own homes and disposable income. Interestingly, the socioeconomic status of participants was evenly distributed across the household income ranges provided by the survey-makers. This shows that the idea of need for digitized security is pervasive no matter the income level. To get more news about biometric safe locks, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

Unsurprisingly, the features within a smart lock are deciding factors. The study found that while different age groups prefer different colors of locks, the main request within a lock is for it to be as secure as possible. This is followed by durability, price and smart features. The younger crowd was interested in voice command capabilities. Overall, battery life, remote lock/unlock, security key override in case of battery failure, and the ability to allow for multiple users are most important to the group; while female consumers consider fingerprint much more important than male consumers.
The biggest overarching concerns are mostly about the reliability of the technology and the more expensive price perception. The majority of users said that they would be willing to pay between $100-$199 for a smart lock. Female consumers expressed bigger concerns about how to use the devices and the lack of familiarity of the benefits.

One leader in the home security industry is SECURAM Smart. It is an offshoot of SecuRam Systems, Inc., the brand best known for bank vault security systems. A recent review by TechHive's Christopher Null, said the following about the SECURAM Touch, a smart home lock that has the ability to unlock with either a fingerprint using RF technology, or a custom code for up to thirty users: " its beefy, circular construction (both interior and exterior) has a reassuring appearance that reminds one of a bank-vault entrance."

This need for a true sense of security from consumers who want to be reassured that their technology is working for them bodes well for tech and security companies who are on the forefront of this shift in the industry.

Securam Systems Inc. CEO, Chunlei Zhou said, "It makes sense that as the world gets more and more connected, people are growing more concerned with the security of their smart devices. We were not surprised to learn that people want their homes to be connected AND secure. We will continue to leverage our expertise to stay ahead of the curve and keep bringing high-security options to smart home owners."

Custom furniture is booming. Grant Trick knows why

Done? If you didn't put Irondale, Alabama, at the top of the list, you're forgiven-it's a little off the beaten path. But despite being secreted away in a quiet suburb of Birmingham, Grant Trick's workshop has become a go-to source for designers all over the country. They come to him in search of exquisite tailoring, good vibes and-in a time when big manufacturers are struggling-reasonable lead times. To get more news about furniture wholesale, you can visit wholesalefurnitureonline.com official website.

"We're the ones maybe reaping the rewards of the terrible situation for the larger manufacturers, because now our lead time is shorter than theirs," Trick tells host Dennis Scully on the latest episode of The Business of Home Podcast. "Now we have our own frame shop. ... We have a good foam resource. We can live off our supply much longer. Our supply would last a North Carolina factory 30 minutes, and we can go three months. We've learned how to buy very well."

Of course, Trick didn't get into the business to compete with Lee Industries or Baker on lead times; he initially didn't intend to get into the business at all. He started his career in fashion, then designed window displays for Tiffany's. A West Coast trip took the designer to San Francisco, where, in the thick of the recession, he started working for a custom furniture workroom-his entree into the world of interior design.

After relocating to Alabama to be closer to family, Trick started his own operation in 2010 and has been growing it steadily ever since. Originally, he produced anything and everything, but over the years has built a reputation for custom furniture driven by a fabric-first approach. That, and a lively Instagram presence (few custom upholstery workrooms are as likely to break out into spontaneous sing-alongs) have won the designer a dedicated clientele.
In this episode of the podcast, he shares a CliffsNotes course on what to look for in a quality sofa, offers insight on why custom is booming right now and explains what he's learned from the early stages of launching his own collection. He also weighs in on a hot industry topic-the social-media-driven copy shaming instigated by anonymous Instagram account @DesignWithinCopy.

"I think if you asked everybody who does what we do, from the fancy New York workrooms to the good ones out West, I think we've all made a few Kagan sofas. It is what it is. [But] none of us are branding that or putting our name on it or taking credit for the design of it," he says. "I feel like the internet shaming thing is pretty lame. If kids were doing it, it'd be called bullying. ... I challenge the person sitting on a nameless Instagram account to come sit in this office, which is where I draw furniture, and give me seven sofas you've never seen before. Try it."

A new business celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday afternoon in Leland.Custom Home Furniture Outlet opened at 2062 Olde Regent Way near the Harris Teeter.

This is an outlet version of the Custom Home Furniture Galleries in Wilmington. Co-Owners John and Kevin Gray say they were delivering to Brunswick County about five days per week from the Wilmington location and with Leland continuing to grow, they knew it was the perfect place to expand.

"We felt like in this area, they really wanted it. Houses are selling fast, they need to furnish it when they move in so we've given the option to get it today," Kevin Gray said. The outlet is open Monday through Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm, and Sundays 1 pm to 5 pm.

This pricey biometric smart lock joins the Wi-Fi club

I reviewed the Lockly Secure Plus smart lock late last year. It integrated a fingerprint reader into its hardware, ostensibly providing a dramatic upgrade to the security level of the system. One thing was missing from the package: Any kind of significant "smart" features that let you tie the Lockly system into the rest of your home. (The lock only supports Bluetooth out of the box.) Recently, Lockly addressed that issue by introducing the Lockly Secure Pro, which adds a Wi-Fi bridge to the system, enabling a few additional capabilities. To get more news about biometric safe locks, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

Sounds like a plan, but first, some semantics. Notably, the Lockly Secure Pro is not actually a new product of its own. Rather, it is a bundle of the existing Lockly Secure Plus hardware along with the new Lockly Secure Link WiFi Hub, which connects the lock to your Wi-Fi network. If you already have a Lockly Secure Plus lock, you can buy the Secure Link WiFi Hub separately for $80, instead of shelling out $300 (or $330 the Latch model that replaces your entry handset) for the bundle. Buying either lock and the hub as a bundle will save you $30 compared to buying the components separately. Since I still had the lock on hand from my previous review, Lockly sent just the WiFi Hub for this story; I tested it with the same Secure Plus hardware I reviewed previously.

The good news is that setting up the Secure Link WiFi Hub is considerably simpler than setting up the lock hardware. In fact, it's downright easy, thanks to clear enough instructions both within the Lockly app and in the full-color, printed manual. The hub consists of two pieces: A small USB device about the size of a thumb drive, plus a standard USB wall wart. To connect, simply put these two items together and plug the combo into an AC outlet. Note that the plug must be within 10 feet of the lock, however, which could be a problem for homes that don't have outlets near their door.

After a quick firmware upgrade to the lock, the two devices were ready to pair, and they then easily connected to my home Wi-Fi network. I had no trouble with any of this, and within a few minutes my Lockly system was live on Wi-Fi.

A standard magnetic door sensor is also included in this kit. After installing it on the door, you pair it with the Lockly app, which then lets the app do double duty, informing you whether the door is open or closed as well as whether it's locked or unlocked.

With all of this set up, well, now what do you do with it? The primary function of the Secure Link WiFi Hub is that it gives you go-anywhere access to the lock, instead of being limited to Bluetooth range. If the kids are locked out and have forgotten their key, access code, or just can't get their mittens off to use the fingerprint reader, you can open the door for them remotely. You also have access to a real-time status of the door and the lock; in other words, it does exactly what any "smart" lock ought to be do right out of the box.

Interestingly, once the hub is installed, the app adds a new toggle switch to the upper left corner that lets you switch between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth access to the lock. Now if your Wi-Fi network goes down or there's a blackout, you can still use your phone to open the lock (locally, that is, and provided the lock has sufficient battery). The onboard Bluetooth radio relies on the lock's battery to operate, unlike your Wi-Fi router and broadband gateway (unless you have those devices plugged into an uninterruptible power supply, that is).

The addition of Wi-Fi connectivity also lets you connect Lockly to Alexa and Google Assistant. Once I installed the skill, I was able to use Alexa to tell me the status of the lock and to unlock it via voice. (Note that Alexa voice-unlock is disabled by default for security reasons. To enable it, you'll need to create a four-digit PIN that you'll recite to open the deadbolt.

The bad news should be obvious if you've read my earlier coverage of the Lockly Secure Plus: This deadbolt is still a bear to deal with from a physical standpoint. The installation process hasn't changed, obviously, and mounting it to the door remains challenging due to the requirement of carefully placing a peculiar metal bar between to connect the interior and exterior escutcheons. I've installed this hardware before and could feel my stomach sinking when I took it out of the box again to write this review. Had I been in charge of this product, I would have redesigned all of that before I bothered adding Wi-Fi to the mix.

Smart Locks For Your Rental Property: Automating Self Check-In

Many people prefer to stay in rental properties over hotels for both short and long-term visits. Rental properties give visitors the opportunity to live like a local, while offering privacy and comfortable accommodations. To get more news about biometric safe locks, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

To make things as convenient as possible, many rental property owners are equipping their homes with smart locks. This allows for automated self check-in, which negates the need to coordinate times to meet up to gain access to the property.

At Level, we've designed our products to put people before technology and home before smart. Level locks exceed industry standards and are globally recognized for quality and product design - making them the right choice for your rental property.

Keep reading to learn more about how smart locks can benefit your rental.
What Is a Smart Lock?
Smart locks are a way to secure your home or business and control who has access, where, and when. These locks are often battery-operated and offer high-level security capabilities. When you install a smart lock, the struggle of getting keys made and hiding them under the mat is over -- keyless entry is the wave of the future.

What Are Level Locks?
Unlike many bulky, heavy-looking smart locks, Level locks hide technology on the inside of the door.

Level Bolt invisibly transforms your existing deadbolt, making your current lock smart while maintaining the design of your home. Features like auto-lock and unlock, activity tracking, and access sharing provide convenience and safety. Plus, since you are keeping the outer housing of your lock, you can always use your existing keys as a backup.

Level Lock and Level Lock - Touch Edition build upon Level Bolt and are complete replacements for your lock.

All Level locks give you the convenience of using your phone, voice, or even a plain old key to enter your home. Level Lock - Touch Edition includes even more technology so you can also access your home with touch and key cards (NFC).

In some cases, a smart lock can also be accompanied by a keypad, which is a particularly smart investment for a rental property. Keypads offer phone-free visitor access through unique shareable key codes. With the ability to control the duration a code can be used, a rental property owner can provide temporary access to visitors.

Eufy Smart Lock opens with the touch of your finger

A nice perk of being a reviewer is that I can try different gadgets and then choose one one that's right for me.To get more news about best smart home company 2022, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

I've used smart deadbolt locks for almost 10 years now, and I love the convenience of being able to punch in a code to unlock my front door. The lock that's been on my door now is the fourth one I've tried, and I like it, but there are some features I wish it had and some features I never use.The biggest knock on the Eufy Security Smart Lock Touch is that it does not have Wi-Fi.

This may or may not be a big deal to you.Smart locks with Wi-Fi can be locked and unlocked from your phone, even if you are across the country. You can also configure the lock when you are away from home, perhaps to add a code for a temporary user such as a handyman or dog sitter.

Wi-Fi smart locks can also tell a user when the door is locked or unlocked during the day. Finally, no Wi-Fi means no integration with Amazon's Alexa or Google Home, so there's no voice control or ability to combine opening the door with other automations like turning on lights.

While those are cool features, I really don't use them. I'm looking for a door lock that opens easily without a key. My previous locks used a keypad to unlock, which was nice, but the Smart Lock Touch adds a fingerprint reader that I love.

Instead of Wi-Fi, the Eufy Smart Lock Touch interacts with your phone via a Bluetooth connection, which means within 50 feet or so.When I first installed my first smart lock all those years ago, I was a little hesitant to leave the house without a house key. If I went for a walk, I'd grab my keys and phone and lock the door.

As I got used to unlocking with a passcode, I became more confident and started leaving the house without a key for my walks. I'm not saying you should do that, but it works for me.The Eufy Security Smart Lock Touch gives you four ways to unlock the door.

My favorite unlock method is via the fingerprint reader. It is very fast and very convenient. You can also use the keypad, a physical key (Eufy includes five keys) or the Eufy Security app on your phone (within Bluetooth range).

The Smart Lock Touch is powered by four AA batteries, and the unlocking methods all require battery power except for the physical key.Because there is no Wi-Fi radio to power, those AA batteries should last up to a year. What happens if you don't have the key and the batteries are dead?

There is a microUSB port on the bottom of the lock (under the key slot). Plug in any external USB phone battery and it will power up the lock so you can open it.To remove your old deadbolt, unscrew the two screws on the inside of the door, remove the inside and outside portions of the lock (they pull away from each other), and then unscrew the two screws on the edge of the door where the bolt moves in and out and pull out the bolt.

Once the deadbolt is removed, you can follow Eufy's instructions to get the new lock installed (the company has a good video in the app). The installation can get tricky if your strike plate (the piece on the door frame) is not lined up with the bolt. If your lock is hard to lock or unlock, you'll need to work on the alignment of your deadbolt to the strike plate. If your lock doesn't turn smoothly, you might need a handyman to reposition the strike plate.

Since this was not my first lock replacement, I was able to get the Smart Lock Touch installed in about five minutes. Once the batteries are in place, a speaker on the lock will ask you to download the Eufy Security app to your phone and pair the lock to the phone via Bluetooth.Once the lock is named, you'll be asked to set a passcode for your user account in the app. Once you set the passcode (four to eight digits), you can set up a fingerprint. You can register multiple fingerprints and the prints are stored in the lock (up to 50 prints total).

Setting up additional users is simple. Each user has to have a unique passcode. Because my wife and I use the same passcode for the door (old habits), I just registered her fingerprints under my username in the app.

Wyze's New Door Lock Unlocks With Your Fingerprint

Door lock technology is quickly catching up to cell phone advancements, with fingerprint unlocking available in several new models. One new option, the Lock Bolt from smart tech company Wyze, is a very affordable version that allows users to unlock a door in under a second. To get more news about high security lock systems, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

While many other smart door locks take several seconds to fully release, the Wyze version boasts an impressive half-second response time. That equates to a greater feeling of security knowing you won't have to hang out on a dark porch waiting for the door to open.

With the ability to store up to 50 fingerprints, the Lock Bolt can easily identify all authorized users. It can also accommodate up to 20 different keypad codes and has an anti-peep feature that lets you add random digits to the beginning or end of your code to throw off anyone trying to spy out your secret numbers.

Although not truly programmable, the device has an auto lock feature that will lock the door after a specified period of time. This makes sure the door stays secured during the night even if someone comes in late and forgets to manually bolt it. However, because there are no door sensors to tell the lock if the door is open or closed, it would still turn to the locked position even if the door was open.

The Wyze Lock Bolt uses Bluetooth to connect to an accompanying smartphone app instead of Wi-Fi, which limits the range of remote features. Users can only lock and unlock the door via the app within the 16-foot radius of the lock's Bluetooth 5.0 radio, and no smart home integration is possible. That means you can't control the door when you're away from home, set schedules, or operate it with Alexa or Siri voice commands.

When logged on to the Wyze app (which must still be within Bluetooth range of the door), users can access records of how and when people have opened the lock, allowing you to monitor traffic in and out of the house.

One benefit of being Bluetooth only is that the battery life of of the Lock Bolt's included four AAs is much longer than it is for Wi-Fi versions. The Wyze Lock Bolt can go 10 to 12 months on one set of batteries, compared to just three to six months for Wi-Fi connected locks.

If the batteries happen to run out before you get a chance to change them, you can always just recharge the Lock Bolt with the USB-C port at the base of the lock, juicing it up enough to enter a code and unlock the door. While most smart door locks range from $150 to $300, the Wyze fingerprint model is offered for just $69.99. For example, the Lockley Flex Touch with Biometric 3D Fingerprint is a similar Bluetooth version but sells for more than double the price at $159, while the eufy Security Smart Lock Touch goes for even more at $169. The price point for the Wyze definitely makes the drawbacks more palatable. For an even better deal, Wyze Cam Plus subscribers can score another $10 off the regular price.

Do Smart Door Locks Need Wi-Fi?

The era of manual locks is being phased out as the smart home technology revolution changes the way we interact with our home environment. Smart locks are keyless digital locks that are rapidly gaining popularity in homes around the world and are now considered an integral part of smart home security systems. But, like other smart devices, do smart locks require Wi-Fi to work? Why do smart locks need Wi-Fi?To get more news about high security lock systems, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

Why do smart locks need Wi-Fi?
A Wi-Fi connection allows you to access your smart lock remotely. This makes it possible for you to lock and unlock your door from anywhere, be it from work or inside your home. A Wi-Fi connection allows you to monitor your door activities using your smart lock-dedicated app.

WiFi-enabled Smart Locks
WiFi-enabled smart locks are controlled and managed via WiFi connectivity to some degree. It's suitable for those seeking integration capabilities as the lock's functions are further enhanced when connected to the Internet.

Non-WiFi-enabled Smart Locks
Non-WiFi-enabled locks usually incorporate the Bluetooth protocol. This helps connect the lock to your smartphone, allowing both devices to communicate with each other. Its features, functions and performance aren't affected by an Internet connection.

How to Connect Smart Lock Wifi?
In most cases, configuring a separate guest network can be done easily via your Wi-Fi router.

Please note that the configuration may vary slightly depending on the router model and manufacturer used. You can find a customized guide for your model in the manual of your router. Alternatively, search for the specific instructions on the Internet using the model name.

Open the settings of your router
Enter the IP address of your router in the URL bar of your browser. You can find the address in the user manual of your router. Many manufacturers offer their own smartphone apps with which you can read out these settings.

Enter username and password in the dialog box
If you have not changed your username and password in the past, you can usually find the data in the manual of your router. Note: We recommend to always change the data and to use a password manager to increase security.

Enable the guest network
In the router settings (usually in the "Wi-Fi" section) you will find the option "Guest access", "Allow guest network" or "Set up guest network". Activate this option and add the name of the guest network (SSID). Refer to the router's manual if necessary. Of course, you can also find the exact way to configure the guest network on the Internet using the model name of your router.

Make sure that the guest network is configured correctly
●Choose a name ("SSID") for your guest network and set up a password. Select "WPA2" as encryption standard.
●Make sure that the "Allow guest access to local network resources" checkbox (or similar) is unchecked. On some routers, only the "Isolate" checkbox is available: check it to isolate the guest network from your local network.

How to Make Your Own Smart Home Security System

According to the latest data from the FBI, there were over 1.1 million burglaries in 2019, which means a break-in occurs every 28 seconds in the US. With a smart home security system, you can keep an eye on your home from your smartphone, get alerts whenever someone steps foot on your property, lock your doors from anywhere in the world, and more. Here's everything you need to know about how to build your own smart home security system and how to choose the right membership plan. To get more news about smart home security products, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

Before You Start:

You only need one device to start your smart home security system, but you can always add more devices whenever you want. These smart devices can be controlled from anywhere in the world with your smartphone or with voice commands if you have a smart speaker.
It's important to find smart home devices that work together. For example, you don't want to get a video doorbell from Ring and a smart camera from Google because then you might have to pay for two different subscription plans and use two different apps to control your devices.
Most smart home security devices won't let you access certain advertised features unless you pay a monthly subscription fee. These membership plans are usually much cheaper than traditional home security plans, but they don't always offer the same level of protection.
Lastly, all smart home devices require a strong, reliable WiFi connection in order to work properly. So, you should test your WiFi signal strength at the locations where you want to install your smart devices before you buy them.
If you ever feel confused or frustrated when setting up your smart home devices, HelloTech can send someone to your home to help. We have thousands of professional technicians across the country, so someone can be there to install your smart security devices for you as soon as today.
If you want to build your smart home security system on a budget, one of the best devices to start with is a video doorbell. With this one device, you will receive alerts whenever someone approaches your door. Then you can see and speak to any visitors in real-time.

According to ADT, 34% of burglars enter through the front door and 22% enter through the back door. So, installing video doorbells can help you capture footage of the most common points of entry to your home.

Most video doorbells will record a short video whenever motion is detected. These clips are stored in the cloud, so you can watch them any time you want and easily share them with other family members or even the police.
With smart security cameras, you can monitor your entire home. Just like video doorbells, these smart devices have motion detectors built in, and you will be alerted whenever someone steps foot on your property. Then you can see and speak to any visitors from your smartphone.

However, unlike video doorbells, smart cameras usually have higher resolution video, better night vision, built-in sirens, and some even come with automatic floodlights. Plus, more than a third (37%) of convicted burglars said that just the sight of a security camera would stop them from breaking into a home, according to a recent survey of convicts.

There are two different types of smart cameras: indoor and outdoor. Outdoor cameras are usually waterproof and wireless, so you can mount them anywhere, but you have to charge the batteries every few months. Indoor cameras usually need to be plugged in, and they often come with some kind of screen that block the camera when you want privacy.
In a survey of 500 convicted burglars, more than a third (39%) said they broke into homes through an unlocked door. If you want to protect your home when you're away, a smart lock will let you know whenever your door is unlocked. Then you can lock your door from your smartphone.

Most burglaries happen when people are at work between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, according to ADT. When you're not at home, you can use a smart lock to create "digital keys" for house cleaners, dog walkers, and other guests. This way, they can access your home at designated times, and you don't have to give your keys to anyone.

You can find smart locks that will work with your existing keys, or you can get one that doesn't use keys at all. There are smart locks with keypads, so you can use a code to enter your home, or you can find models that use your fingerprint. Some smart locks can automatically unlock your door when you approach with your smartphone or even an Apple Watch.

Lock down and lock up: how to keep systems and data safe

Home working can be less secure than connecting to the internet while on campus via the dedicated education and research network, Janet. So, there are many and varied potential security potholes to negotiate. To get more news about safe lock systems, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

Jisc's cyber security team has been flat out providing technical security expertise and services to colleges and universities. Here's a round-up of their broad advice: Insist on strong passwords for all user accounts and, where possible, implement two-factor authentication. Please refer to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) guidance for system owners responsible for determining password policy.

Devices
Make sure devices encrypt data while at rest, which will protect information on the device if it is lost or stolen. Also check that devices include tools that can remotely lock access to the device, and erase or retrieve data.

Personal devices
If you are permitting people to use their own devices to work remotely, please refer to the NCSC's bring your own device (BYOD) guidance.

Virtual private networks (VPNs)
Through data encryption, VPNs allow remote users to securely access IT resources, such as email and file services, and is advisable for those dealing with sensitive information. If using a VPN, make sure it is fully patched.

Collaboration tools
There's been a lot of coverage about video conferencing applications such as Zoom, and a previous blog by the head of Jisc's security operations centre outlines simple steps to take to make these applications more secure. The NCSC has produced guidance, while the Janet computer security incident response team (CSIRT) has also published advice.
Training
Jisc advocates security information awareness training for all staff and students. For organisations that don't have their own online modules, the NCSC's Top Tips for Staff e-learning package will help fill the gap, while Jisc also offers specific training on phishing.

Removable media
USB drives can be easily shared and are not easy to track. They can also introduce malware, so Jisc advises against their use. There are other, more secure means of sharing files, such as corporate storage or collaboration tools.

Phishing
There have been many reported coronavirus scams. Cyber criminals are quick to take advantage of any disaster, playing on emotions to commit fraud by encouraging people to click through to dodgy websites which, for example, offer face masks for sale, or ask for donations. Others may trick people into giving away passwords.

Nuki Smart Lock Vulnerabilities Allow Hackers to Open Doors

Nuki Smart Lock and Nuki Bridge - that allow users to unlock their doors with their smartphones by simply walking in range. To get more news about smart home security products, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

The vulnerabilities identified by NCC Group in the latest versions of the products could allow attackers to intercept a Nuki product's network traffic, to execute arbitrary code on the device, to send commands with elevated privileges, or cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition. The vendor has released patches.Nuki smart lock vulnerabilities

"Some of the vulnerabilities result in a fully compromised device, including capabilities to open and close the door without the owner noticing," NCC researchers Guillermo del Valle Gil and Daniel Romero told SecurityWeek.

"This could be achieved either from the same WiFi network as the lock device, or from Nuki servers themselves. Some of the other attacks require physical access to at least one device, which may be possible, since some of them are installed outside the protected area," the researchers also said.

Both Nuki Smart Lock and Nuki Bridge were found to lack SSL/TLS certificate validation, allowing an attacker to perform a man-in-the-middle attack and intercept network traffic. The bug is tracked as CVE-2022-32509.

"It was possible to set up an intercepting proxy to capture, analyze and modify communications between the affected device and the supporting web services," NCC Group explains in a technical advisory.

The security researchers also identified two buffer overflow bugs (CVE-2022-32504 and CVE-2022-32502) that could be exploited to achieve arbitrary code execution on the vulnerable devices.

Impacting the code responsible for parsing JSON objects received from the SSE WebSocket, the first buffer overflow could be combined with the lack of SSL/TLS certificate validation to intercept and tamper with the WebSocket packets to take control of the device.

"Additionally, if a malicious user could get access to the Nuki's SSE servers this could be used to take control of all the affected devices," NCC warns.

Discovered in the HTTP API parameter parsing code, the second buffer overflow could be exploited from within the LAN, even if the attacker did not have a valid token, as long as the HTTP API was enabled.

NCC Group also discovered that Nuki's implementation of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) API lacked proper access controls (CVE-2022-32507), allowing an attacker to send high-privileged commands they should not have permissions to send.

Because BLE commands could be sent from unprivileged accounts, such as the keypad, an attacker could open the keyturner without knowing the keypad code, and could even try to change the keyturner admin security PIN, the researchers say.

To open the keyturner, an attacker would take advantage of the fact that the impacted devices also expose JTAG hardware interfaces. Tracked as CVE-2022-32503, the flaw allows an attacker to tamper with internal and external flash memory.

"An attacker with physical access to any of these ports may be able to connect to the device and bypass both hardware and software security protections. JTAG debug may be usable to circumvent software security mechanisms, as well as to obtain the full firmware stored in the device unencrypted," NCC says.

The company also discovered SWD hardware interfaces exposed on both Nuki Smart Lock and Nuki Bridge devices, that an unencrypted channel was used for administrative communication - allowing devices on the local network to passively collect network traffic - and that crafted HTTP and BLE packets could be used to cause DoS conditions.

"There were also some denial of service vulnerabilities found which were not fully developed, affecting both the HTTP and Bluetooth APIs. These may end up developing into something bigger, however, these were not the focus of this research," NCC's researchers told SecurityWeek.

CES 2022: Schlage's new Encode Plus smart deadbolt lock supports home keys in your Apple Wallet

Schlage's latest smart lock is the Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt. It doesn't look all that different from Schlage's similar smart lock products, with a keypad on the outside portion of the lock. The keypad allows you or guests to enter a code to unlock your door. To get more news about safe lock systems, you can visit securamsys.com official website.

What makes the Encode Plusdifferent is that it is one of the first smart locks to support Apple's home key platform. Once the lock is installed, you'll be able to add a digital key to the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch. You can also share keys with friends, family members, or guests.
To unlock your door, you only need to tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to the keypad of the Encode Plus. You don't have to unlock your phone or watch, similar to how Apple's Express Transit Cards work. Additionally, if you're iPhone's battery runs out of power, you can still unlock your door for up to 5 hours after it powers off.

For households with Android and iPhone owners, you can still use the Encode Plus using standard unlock codes or the Schlage Home app. It also integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

All of this technology in a deadbolt comes at a cost -- the Encode Plus will launch later this spring at $299. It'll come in a variety of designs and finishes so you can pick the style that fits your home.
